Some Quick Tips To Prevent A Malfunction
They say that prevention is often the best cure. So, do not wait until you have an emergency to take care of your clothes. Practice the following tips to help you avoid a potential wardrobe disaster.
Perform A Quick Outfit Inspection
Before you head out the door, you should look over your outfit to make sure everything is okay. Take care to look for any buttons that are becoming loose and need reinforcing. And don’t forget to test your zippers to make sure that they work properly.
Wear Your Heels At Least An Hour Before Leaving The House
We all know how important it is to break in your shoes before wearing them to an event. Trust us, your feet will thank you for it. And as comfort is the key to confidence, perfect your stiletto strut to avoid looking like a baby deer.
Take Care When Choosing Your Undergarments
When you choose the right underwear for your outfit, visible lines are a thing of the past.
What To Do In A Wardrobe Emergency
In case of emergencies, you should have kit handy to avoid wardrobe malfunctions. And the best thing is that you can make this kit at home using some common items. Grab a cosmetics case and stock up on the following
- Stain stick
- Wet wipes
- Razor
- Lip balm
- Chalk
- Super glue
- Bobby pins
- Small spray bottle
- Doubled sided tape
- Paper clips
- Deodorant Residue
As a general rule, you should let your antiperspirant dry before putting on your outfit. However, we understand that there are times when you are in a hurry.
Finding residue on the sides of your tank top is annoying, so keep some wet wipes with you for emergencies.
Slipping Straps
We can all agree that it is annoying when you wear a sleeveless shirt on a warm day and your bra straps keep falling down. Simply secure them in place using some safety pins or double sided tape.
Stuck Zippers
A stuck zipper can be a nightmare when you are in a bathroom stall. So, lubricate your zip teeth with some lip balm. And be gentle when you are tugging so you do not break your zipper.
Wrinkled Clothes
If you are strapped for time and do not have a hair straightener handy – more on that later – spray some water onto your clothes and let them air dry. This tip works best for clothes with natural fibers like cotton.
Static Garments
The worst thing about silk or wool clothes is that they can bite. So, eliminate those static shock by going over your clothes with a dryer sheet or metal hanger.
Unwanted Billowing
While Marilyn Monroe might have made the ‘flying skirt’ iconic, it can be a nightmare for the rest of us.
Especially on those windy days when your skirt or dress is going all over the place. Weigh down your billowing garment by sticking some coins to the seam of the hemline using some clear tape.
Stubborn Creases
Your hair straightener can do more than get rid of frizz and add some shine. As it is compact and heats up quickly, it is ideal for fixing a crooked collar or smoothing creases.
Just be sure to adjust the settings for the material you want to use it on. Thicker fabrics can endure more heat. But delicate fabrics do better on a low heat setting.
Shoe Blues
When it comes to your emergency kit, one of the most useful items to have is a tube of super glue. From reattaching a loose sole to repairing broken ankle straps, super glue will be your sticky secret weapon.
Off Whites
Keeping your white clothing white can sometimes feel like a full time job. Especially in the summer months.
Accidents happen, so if you spill some food or lipstick on your favourite white top, don’t worry. Simply rub some white chalk on the stain to conceal it temporarily if you cannot get to a sink.
Pesky Pilling
While we could live in your favourite knitwear garments forever, our cosy cardis can pill over time. so, if that happens, spread your clothes over a flat surface and go over them using a sharp razor. It is the perfect way to get rid of those fuzzy balls in short, vertical strokes.
Loose Belts
Have a belt that is too long for you? It can easily be adjusted with a hole punch. But do not just use the one that is on your desk. A heavy-duty revolving hole punch works best at creating some additional notches on your belt.
Hanging Or Ripped Hems
For any hanging or ripped hems, we recommend knowing your way around a sewing machine. Or knowing someone who does.
However, sometimes you can have a wardrobe malfunction on the go. So, in that case, a fabric stapler is a great option for rescuing any fallen or ripped hems.
Fallen Buttons
Ah, buttons can be one of the most delicate part of your clothing. Especially those that have not been stitched properly.
If you need to reattach a button quickly, you can simply use a paperclip. Just open it up into two straight prongs and then thread them through your button holes. Next, hook the paper clip so the tips do not mark your skin and there you have it.
Scuffed Suede
While we love suede, it can be hard to avoid scuff marks and keep it looking pristine. But if you do have scuff marks on your favourite suede boots, don’t sweat it.
You can remove them in a second with a white or colourless eraser. And a damp cloth and some white vinegar can also wok wonders for those stubborn stains.
Broken Clasps
If you are looking for a timeless way of jazzing up your scarf of plain blazer, a brooch is just the thing to have handy.
But there are times when your beloved brooch will lose its pin. If that happens, replace it with a magnet. This tip is especially great for your delicate fabrics that you do not want to pierce with a pin.
Errant Earrings
We have all had those days where you are rushing to get ready and cannot find the back of your favourite earrings.
And while it is annoying, there is something you can use in a pinch. A pencil eraser. Who knew they were so good at multitasking? Your pencil eraser is the perfect option for your missing earring back.
However, it is always a good idea to be prepared in case of emergencies. So, we recommend having a stock of extra earring backs in your purse.
Underwear Peeping Through
Have you ever had one of those moments where your underwear is peeking out from over your waistband? Especially when you are bending over?
While it is a nuisance, there is a little trick you can use. Clip your underwear to your trousers using some bobby pins at the side seams. Your top or shirt should disguise them.
Holes In Your Hosiery
There is nothing worse than getting ready for the day and there is a hole in your only pair of tights. So, to prevent ladders from forming or getting worse, lightly spray your tights with some hairspray
And remember to moisturise your hands beforehand. Also, you should probably check for ragged fingernails before rolling on your hosiery.
